The Borough of Munhall
The Borough of Munhall was officially incorporated in 1901 and named after John Munhall who sold and developed a number of lots in a section of town known at that time as “East Homestead”. As the neighboring borough of Homestead was increasing in working class population, a section of the newly created Munhall was almost exclusively reserved for the elites and supervisors of the town and mill. Not only did the housing stock differ, which was predominately composed of Brownstones, Venetians, Mansens and Queen Annes, but the lots were much larger too, with a company-stipulated building setback of at least 25 feet.
Munhall still encompasses most of its historic jurisdiction, but its contemporary footprint differs greatly than its original confines. In addition to the East Homestead section, the borough now spills into the area traditionally known as “Homestead Park” and out beyond the Homestead Cemetery.
Main Street is the boroughs main commercial thoroughfare and accommodates a number of small businesses and mom and pop shops. The side walks are laid with brick and the lamp posts look as if they were from another era, making one nostalgic of days past.
