Historical Background

Duquesne was incorporated on December 12, 1891 (one year after the construction of the first bridge connecting Duquesne to McKeesport). Duquesne Tube Works was chartered in 1887, four years before the city’s official incorporation.

Architect Frederick John Osterling was born in Duquesne on October 4, 1865. His works included the Westinghouse Air Brake Company General Office Building in Wilmerding, the Washington County Courthouse and Jail, the Union Trust Building in Downtown Pittsburgh, and the first home of industrialist Henry Clay Frick.

Famous jazz pianist Earl Hines was born in Duquesne on December 28, 1903. Hines performed with various iconic jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, and Louis Armstrong.


Duquesne Today

Singer/Songwriter Bob Dylan dedicated his 2012 song Duquesne Whistle to the “Dorothy Six”, which was once the world’s largest blast furnace.

The American Textile Company, headquartered in Duquesne since 1925, produces various bedding products which are distributed throughout the United States.

The Regional Industrial Development Corporation is planning to break ground on a proposed industrial building at its business park in Duquesne. The size of the speculative building is 30,000 square feet.

National mechanical fastener distributor, Fastenal, has developed plans to build an office on the subdivided lot on Route 837.
