Gardening for Pollinators, October 20, 7 pm – register here

Gardens of any size can attract pollinators. Join us to better understand the keys to a successful butterfly garden in western PA and ways we can use our gardens to help our local native bee species. Using native plants and eco-friendly landscape practices provide essential elements that insects need to thrive. The link to join the program will be emailed before the program — be sure to register so that you receive this information.

Supporting Birds in Winter, November 10, 7 pm – register here

When winter sets in, birds depend on plant resources to provide critical nutrients as insects become scarce. We will discuss how we can help sustain birds during the harsh winter months using bird-friendly native woody plants and ways to prepare your landscape at the end of the season to support resident birds through the winter.

Free Plants for Your Home

Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania (ASWP) and SRCOG are offering FREE Certified Backyard Habitats with pollinator gardens for residents of Glassport and McKeesport in Summer-Fall 2021.

Participating households will receive pollinator bundles of native plants (over $100 value), be enrolled in ASWP’s Certified Backyard Habitat (CBH) program, and receive a complimentary ASWP membership.

The CBH program helps people to transform their yards and patios into an oasis for pollinators and birds. By creating Backyard Habitats, residents not only get to enjoy more natural beauty, but also support local birds, pollinators, and wildlife.

You must be a resident of Glassport or McKeesport to qualify for this program. The 2021 program is limited to 35 participating households.

Financial and other support for the Community Conservation Through Backyard Habitat project has been provided by the Department of Environmental Portection’s 2020 Environmental Education Program.
